Ciram

"Ciram" is a word derived from the English word "carrom," or billiards, as it is called in Kuwait, and its definition is quoted from the internet: "It is a game that has wide popularity in the Arabian Peninsula and the Hijaz." The game originated in India and spread throughout the Persian Gulf due to extensive trade between India and the Gulf in the past. It is played on a square table designed specifically for Ciram, and its way of playing is similar to billiards. Everyone knows the extent of the Westernization that has happened to our children, whether in programs and movies or in electronic games that are full of violence and destructive ideas. Our children are using their devices for hours, so neither their mind develops nor their body moves.

It was necessary to find an alternative or alternatives that would attract young people, or, as it is said, "Better to light one candle than curse the darkness." So the Al-Othmans decided to light a new candle to illuminate the darkness of Westernization and the loss of heritage and history. The Ciram competition was launched through Bait Alothman Museum in its first edition, which aims to help young people fill their spare time with what is useful for them by encouraging their positive participation in various competitions, and contributing to the changes taking place today in terms of addiction to electronic devices that harm their health, reduce their focus, and increase their isolation in a virtual electronic world. So, we presented this initiative, which aims to use the energy of young people and the elderly in creative activities that advance the personality and help them to participate realistically and create a spirit of competition among them. In addition to the multiple benefits of these games on the mental health of individuals, as it is considered one of the arithmetic and strategic games that minds work on, chess helps to increase the ability to focus, enhance self-confidence, recognize actions, and learn winning strategies.

This competition is a continuation of the series of successes achieved by the Bait Al-Othman Museum in attracting all segments of society and raising their awareness of the authentic Kuwaiti heritage. More than 200,000 visitors of all age groups visit Bait Al-Othman annually, especially school students, in addition to the meetings and the year-round television programs.

The Museum’s Bait Al-Othman Institute has also achieved an important role in supporting the individual and society by providing a set of training courses and various rehabilitation workshops in cooperation with a distinguished elite of trainers and specialists, such as courses to teach Arabic calligraphy, the Kuwaiti dialect, Kuwaiti customs and traditions, the accessory-making workshop, and photography, in addition to merging some of the modern workshops with the old ones to preserve them from extinction.

The idea of the competition came to complement the cultural heritage awareness series, in which 400 players of different ages participated, and it received a remarkable amount of media attention and interest from those interested in popular sports. Nowadays, we are working on the process of expanding and offering other popular games and seeking to establish a special and permanent center in the Bait Al-Othman Museum for traditional folk games that target the youth and young people and remind them of the past and its roots deeply rooted in this country. We hope that Allah Almighty will assist us and that we will be able to contribute even a small amount to Kuwait and society as a whole.

In conclusion, the Al-Othman family extends its sincere thanks to the Kuwaiti Heritage team for this purposeful and distinguished competition, headed by the dear brother Anwar Al-Rifai and his team working with him in Beit Al-Othman, and for more giving to this beautiful country and our dear children.

God willing, next week we will return to the continuation of the article "Al Mutlaa residents, be careful." I thank everyone who interacted with this article, and God willing, I will be successful in providing the advice.

stay safe.
